Hydrant Use

To: La Mesa residents

Did any of you see someone using a fire hydrant in La Mesa or Sundance in last several days?

Marty Davis noticed that the water system equipment logged two large unexpected water uses of about 500 gallons each, between 3 and 4 PM on Thursday, May 27, 2010.

One of the persistent questions discussed at each water coop board meeting is “unaccounted water use”. This is the difference between the amount pumped out of each well, and the total of all the house meter readings. There are several explanations (e.g. house meters that get clogged and under-report, small undetected leaks in the system, etc.). Someone taking water from a fire hydrant represents water we are all paying to pump, but the coop does not get paid for.

If you see anyone besides Phil Carter, the water operator, using a fire hydrant, I suggest you note the time, place, location, license number, and any identifying information. My personal view is that this does not require calling the Sheriffs office at this time.

Thanks for any help on this.
