Attention La Mesa residents!!! We have officially had a black bear encounter in the La Mesa subdivision. The little guy was searching for food and water, obviously. That’s what has driven them this far down the mountain. While heart-breaking, this is not the place for wild animals of this size! In response, it is recommended that you don’t put out your trash bin until the morning of pick up. Folks are being told by Fish and Game to keep the trash bins and bird feeders in as a preventive measure. (And as a reminder, our CC&Rs state that trash should not be put out more than 24 hours prior to collection and that your bin needs to be removed from the road by 8:00 am of the day after pick-up.)
Below we have some information and resources to keep bears alive and yourself safe.
Immediate Safety Steps
- Get safe: Move yourself, family members, and any pets indoors immediately.
- Make noise: Shout, bang pots and pans, or blow an air horn from a safe window or doorway to haze the bear.
- Clear the path: Ensure the bear has an open route to exit your yard without feeling trapped.
- Do not run or approach: Never chase the bear, let dogs out to fight it, or get close for photos.

Yard Cleanup and Prevention
- Secure trash: Keep garbage cans locked inside a garage or shed until the morning of pickup.
- Remove feeders: Take down bird feeders during active bear seasons, as fallen seeds attract wildlife.
- Clean grills: Scrub your barbecue grill and empty grease traps after every use.
